Lemonade Sky (fine art print)

Lemonade Sky opens out across Trawbreaga Bay beneath one of those enormous Donegal skies that can make the land seem very small.

The bay lies on the north-west coast of Inishowen, sheltered behind Doagh Isle with only a narrow opening to the Atlantic. At low tide it empties into sandbanks, mudflats and shallow channels, so the boundary between land and sea is always changing. The Irish name, Trá Bhréige, is usually translated as 'the treacherous strand' or 'the false strand'.

The colour in this sky takes me straight back to pink lemonade and childhood summers: long warm evenings, dirty bare feet and tar softening on the roads. That memory found its way into the pale lemon and pink light spreading across the bay.

Summer sunsets this far north can last for what feels like hours. Reds, pinks and golds sit low over the Atlantic and briefly turn familiar water into something strange and luminous.

For me, the painting joins two things that are hard to separate - the place as it is now and the way an evening light can suddenly carry you back years.
