Mountain Road (fine art print)

The Mountain Road from Carndonagh to Buncrana is full of small turn-offs and long views: lakes, bog roads, a crannog and the rise of the land towards the horizon. In this painting a narrow road climbs through open country while a passing cloud darkens the skyline ahead.

I used cool yellow, burnt sienna and deeper earth tones for the ground. The light along the roadside sits against the heavier shadow on the ridge, making the higher land feel briefly distant.

Roads like this interest me because they carry more than traffic. They hold memory and anticipation, and the small uncertainty of not seeing what lies beyond the next rise.

Here the road simply continues into the darkened part of the landscape.

That was enough for me: changing weather, a road bending forward, and the feeling that there is always another stretch beyond what you can see.
