Portrait of a Mountain in Summer returns once more to Sliabh Sneacht, a mountain I have known in every season and from countless viewpoints around Inishowen.

Summer makes it feel more open. The days lengthen and grasses and heather bring colour back across the lower slopes.

Walking the mountain changes how you understand it. Tracks leave the road, cross open bogland and climb gradually until the view opens across Inishowen towards Lough Swilly and, on a clear day, Lough Foyle. The mountain reveals itself slowly underfoot rather than all at once from a distance.

Near the summit is Tobar na Súl, the Well of the Eyes, a holy well and traditional place of pilgrimage associated with healing. It adds another layer to the landscape, linking the mountain to belief, memory and the people who walked it before us.

This summer portrait carries that mix of familiarity and discovery: looking towards a mountain that has always marked the centre of home, then remembering how different it feels when you are actually on it.
