He was afraid of water and hated the feeling of it around him. With his mother's persistence, weekly dread slowly became small acts of courage: centimetres of depth, then years of practice. What began as fear eventually turned into freedom. Insecurity gave way to competence; discomfort to peace. He learned to let the water hold him, and in doing so learned to trust himself. It was an understanding earned over time, and one nobody could take away.
