The Pig’s Back, Muckish Mountain (fine art print)

Walking through wet heather, Muckish can almost disappear. Rain sits between you and the mountain until its familiar flat top is reduced to a grey shape in the distance.

Muckish, An Mhucais, rises from the Derryveagh Mountains in north-west Donegal. Its Irish name means 'the pig's back', referring to the long curved ridge that gives the mountain its unmistakable profile.

The mountain also carries an industrial history. High-grade white silica sand was quarried on its northern slopes and brought down along what became known as the Miner's Path, linking this remote place to glassmaking far beyond Donegal.

In the painting, however, the facts recede into weather. Heather brushes your legs, rain gathers on your clothes and the mountain comes and goes through the haze.

I was interested in the experience of walking towards a shape you know is there even when you cannot see it clearly - trusting memory while rain and distance keep redrawing the view.
